Touchable holograms invite a brave new world of virtual reality that we can physically interact with.

At Bristol University a very strange but amazing thing has been happening. The researchers have been experimenting with haptic technology to create actual 3D shapes from ultrasound, that can be seen and felt. We really are living in the future.

According ot the researchers, the experiments have revealed that users of the prototype can actually recognise the shapes produced so accurately that they can match pictures to what they are feeling and seeing, even though its only an ultrasound projection. This involves simple shapes, 3D shapes and also multiple shapes that the device can create.

“In the future, people could feel holograms of objects that would not otherwise be touchable, such as feeling the differences between materials in a CT scan or understanding the shapes of artefacts in a museum.” (Bristol University website)

No announcements have been made yet as to the future uses of this tech but really you can easily imagine uses in hospitals during diagnosis and surgery, and even in computer games. This is the kind of tech breakthrough that really makes me believe I may one day see flying cars.

Check out the video below to see the prototype system demonstrated and get a real idea of how it works.
